Advocacy and Policy Education

The Unit is coordinated by two Program Coordinators

NNFU is through its Policy Education and Advocacy Program promoting bottom-up active participation of small-scale farmers in:
• The design of conducive and an enabling agricultural policy environment
• Implementation, monitoring and evaluation of national agricultural policies, Acts and legislation, programs, projects and activities.

This unit enhances consultative processes among NNFU affiliates in order to bring to the fore issues and matters that affect the livelihoods of farmers on a daily basis to the relevant authorities and stakeholders. The unit, through information and education workshops, embarks on policy analysis through research exercises in order to highlight loopholes in various policies, Acts and legislation in the fields of agriculture, land, environment, water for influencing changes by using various advocacy and lobbying strategies coordinated by NNFU Secretariat in collaboration with the Regional Affiliates.

This unit also embarks on institutional and capacity building processes for regional and local farmers' structures in order to strengthen their analytical and human resource capacity to enable them to undertake advocacy and lobbying activities at regional and local level.

Some of the themes the unit has been focusing on in the last few years are as follows:
• Land and environment,
• Livestock production and marketing,
• Grain production and marketing,
• Horticulture production and marketing,
• Agricultural labor issues,
• HIV/Aids,
• Farm workers,
• Agricultural credit.
